Are those digital drum sets anything like the real thing?
Small ones:

Large ones:

Would this be realistic at all, and if so, are the large ones or small ones better?
The larger sets are definitely better and more like real drums to play.
The difference between the electronic and real drums is similar to the difference between playing a grand piano or a synth keyboard.
Real drums move a lot of air when you strike them. The vibrations of the drum heads cause the adjacent drums to vibrate sympathetically, creating an overall sound of the kit that you don’t get when you strike a plastic pad. Also, the fact that the sound comes out of a speaker next to you takes a bit of getting used to. With real drums, the sound is more immediate and comes from the drum right in front of you.
Electronic kits give you a variety of different tones to choose from, and can be useful in many situations. They are especially good for practicing in locations where the sound of real drums would be a problem. You can put on headphones and not worry about it.
All things being equal, I would choose real drums over electronic… but if I had to play an electronic kit, I would get the best one possible such as the higher end Roland or Yamaha kits.
I would avoid the small table top kits. They are basically toys.
peace
